Robert Burton's "State of Jefferson"

"The State of Jefferson is a state of mind and a shared geography, separated by the California/Oregon border. There's a kinship here, a different world from the populous regions. Living alone away from crowds, it's just as well to get lost in big thoughts in the stillness of empty trails and abandoned spaces. Like the way people live and die, accidents of history, how many people now live in the desert, how few in the land of rivers, how nature is important to the psyche, how every moment dissolves behind you into dust until you dissolve into dust, why it is we want to make connections so badly in the first place; why we like to talk, create, and share."
